WebbLaser scanning provides a good means to collect information on forest stands. This paper presents an approach to delineate single trees automatically in small footprint light detection and ranging (lidar) data in deciduous and mixed temperate forests. In rasterized laser data possible tree tops are detected with a local maximum filter. WebbPreviously, the approach taken to create the lidar returns depends upon a probability model of the spatial distribution of canopy structure. This approach is appropriate for large-footprint lidar. However, a small footprint lidar can have a footprint as small as 0.5 m, so a more spatially explicit method is in order.
