Writing, unlike art, arose from a very specific context: agriculture. Around 10,000 BCE, the Neolithic Revolution started, and agricultural practice began. WebIt was not until the 1950s that the system was understood well enough to start the wave of decipherment that dominated the 1980s and 1990s.
